Da un'incantevole posizione panoramica si affaccia su Palermo il complesso del convento di Baida. Nel 1185 (stesso anno della dedicazione della Cattedrale) fu edificata la Chiesa e dedicata a san Giovanni Battista. Nel 1371 i conti di Modica ricostruirono la Chiesa in stile chiaramontano, incorporandola al monastero benedettino e chiamandovi i monaci della vicina abbazia di San Martino delle Scale. Nei secoli successivi fu sede dei Cistercensi, della mensa arcivescovile, degli Agostiniani e dei Carmelitani. Nel 1596 l'arcivescovo Diego de Haedo donò l'intero complesso ai frati minori. Il frontale della chiesa è preceduto da un portico merlato con volte a crociera. La parte centrale della facciata è rincassata; al centro di essa, una bifora con lo stemma dei Chiaramonte. Il portale della Chiesa è del 1507 della bottega del Gagini. All'interno, in fondo all'abside chiaromontana con la finestra a sesto acuto c'è una vetrata di fr. Alberto Farina ofm. Sotto l'arco trionfale gotico si eleva l'altare, la cui fronte è costituita dalla pala dell'antico altare di scuola gaginiana. L'altare è sormontato da un moderno ciborio di vetro soffiato, polimetacrilato e resina. Dal ciborio, attorniata da sette lampade, pende la colomba eucaristica. Ai lati dell'altare, sulle pareti dell'arco trionfale, sue affreschi del XIV sec. raffigurano la Madre di Dio con gli Angeli e i santi Antonio Abate e Giovanni Battista. Da notare inoltre la statua di san Giovanni Battista di Antonello Gagini e il recente ambone. All'ingresso dell'aula della chiesa, sul lato sinistro, si trova la tomba del ven. Francesco da Picciano, frate morto nel 1851 in fama di santità. Dell'originale chiostro benedettino rimangono soltanto tre lati. Il lato est consta di nove campate con volte a crociera gotica, le cui colonnine richiamano quelle del chiostro di Monreale. I capitelli sono tutti diversi, raffiguranti scene bibliche.
The whole buildings of Baida Friary overlooks Palermo from a wonderful panoramic place. In 1185 (the same year of Palermo Cathedral dedication) was built St. John the Baptist Church dedicated. In 1371 Counts of Modica rebuilt the church in Chiaramonte gothic style annexing a benedictine monastery calling to live it monks of near St. Martino delle Scale Abbey. In the following centuries it was lived by Cistercians, archbishop’s revenue, Augustinians and Carmelites. In 1596 the archbishop Diego de Haedo gave the whole building to friars minor.The church frontal is preceded by an embattled porch with cross vaults. The central part of the face is re-embedded and with a double lancet window, with the coat of arms of Chiaramonte family. The church’s portal is 1507 by Gagini school. Inside, at the end of apse with a ogive window, there is a stained glass by Alberto Farina ofm. Under the gothic triumphal arch it arise the altar, its front is a marble sculpture from the old altar by Gagini school. The altar is surmounted by a modern blown glass ciborium built with polimethacrylate and resin. From ciborium, surrounded by seven lamps, hangs the eucharistic dove. At the side of altar, on the triumphal arch walls there are two frescos portraying the Mother of God with angels and the saints Anthony Abbot and John the Baptist. There is as well the John the Baptist statue by Antonello Gagini and the new ambo. At the entrance of the church, on the left side there is the tomb of Ven. Francesco from Picciano ofm, died in 1851 like a holiness. Of the original benedictine cloister remains only three side. The east side has nine spans with cross gothic vaults. Its double little columns remind those of Monreale cloister. Their capitals are all different, portraying biblical scenes.
